Verständnis [Understanding] 2022

A new three-person, intimate play, written by Nottingham based playwright, Dan Scott.

Nick is a half-German, half-British teenager who moves to Coventry after being raised in Cologne – his paternal grandparents are in Birmingham, his mother longs for Europe. Against the backdrop of a failing marriage, we witness his confusion of figuring out where home is. Told in a dynamic direct-to-audience storytelling style in both English and German with English surtitles, the production integrated over 100 illustrations by Raphael Achache into this story about feeling ‘in-between’ and about the importance of understanding one another.

“This was fantastic, easily the best play I’ve seen this year.” – Rebecca Saw

“Heartbreaking story told with immense beauty & gentle humour via an illustrated production format that draws you into a live action illustrated world.” – Jayne Williams

“It’s a tight, three-piece performance…Although many directors would have plumped for the use of a screen for this, this is a highly innovative and quite beautiful way of illustrating the performance.” – Leftlion

“Verständnis was really one of the best shows I’ve seen in a while. Such a fun and engaging way to tell a really heartfelt story.” – Annis McGee

“…touching, enlightening and beautifully ambitious…” – Oddsocks Productions
